Start tonight, and they could be reading you their first book by the end of this week.

Sound familiar?

They know their letters. So why can't they read "cat"?

Most kids learn letter names: "ay, bee, see." But reading runs on letter sounds, blended together: /c/ /a/ /t/ → cat.

That one missing step is why so many bright, letter-loving kids stall. And it's why the usual "easy reader" books feel impossible. They're full of words your child hasn't been taught to sound out yet.

Kids don't need more books. They need books made only of sounds they already know.

We call it the Known-Sounds Method, and it's the whole idea behind this kit. Teach a few sounds. Read a tiny book made only of those sounds. Feel the win. Add a few more. Repeat. Day 6 is first-book day.

The moment this is all for

The night they read to you.

They pick up a little book they helped make. They put a finger under the first word. "P… i… p. Pip." Then the next word. Then the whole sentence, on their own.

Then they look up at you and say: "Again!"

That's what this kit is built for. Not drills for the sake of drills, but the first time your child reads you a real sentence, start to finish, and knows they did it. Day 6 is first-book day.

How it works

15 minutes. Three steps. That's it.

1

Read the lesson card

Each card is a word-for-word script. "Say this. Point here. Now you try." No prep and no guessing.

2

Play one sound game

Quick, wiggle-friendly games that practise the day's sounds. Kids think they're playing, not studying.

3

They read the mini-book

Every word uses only sounds they've learned. They read it to you, top to bottom, and get a sticker on the chart.

Peek inside

Here's a peek at Lesson 1.

These lines come straight from the Day 1 card. If you can read them out loud, you can teach your child to read.

Built on systematic phonics, the approach with the strongest research behind it: s, a, t, p, i, n first, then step by step. Every word in every lesson and book is checked so it only uses sounds your child has already been taught.

Who made this? Kitchen Table Readers is made by parents, for parents. No fancy credentials, just a careful, tested method and a promise to refund you if it doesn't work.

Lesson 1 · 15 minutes

Meet /s/ and /a/

Say: "This letter says /sss/, like a hissing snake. Keep it long: sssss."
Say: "This letter says /a/, like the start of a-a-apple."
Game: put the sound cards under upside-down cups. Shuffle. They lift a cup and shout the sound.
Point to one card, then the other, faster and faster. Then let THEM test YOU.

Done. Sticker on the Reading Path. See you tomorrow.

Can we talk about price?

One-time payment. Less than $1 a lesson, and yours forever: print it again for every child in your family.
For comparison: one specialist reading-tutoring session averages $113 in America's biggest cities.1 The whole kit costs less than a quarter of that, and it's yours to repeat with every child.
Founding price. These prices go up by $10 (to $37 and $43) once our first 100 families have joined.

Is this right for your child?

✅ Great fit if your child…

  • is about 4 to 7 years old
  • knows some letters (or none, that's fine too)
  • can't yet sound out simple words like "sat" or "pin"
  • does better with short, playful sessions

❌ Not the right fit if your child…

  • already reads simple books on their own (they're past this level)
  • needs specialist support. Your child's teacher or a specialist is the right place to start.

Questions parents ask

I'm not a teacher. Can I really do this?

Yes. That's exactly who it's built for. Every lesson card tells you word for word what to say and do. If you can read a bedtime story, you can run a lesson.

What do I actually receive?

A download link straight to your email right after checkout. The kit comes as printable PDFs: lesson cards, mini-books, sound cards, the chart and the bonuses. Print at home on regular paper.

My child can't sit still for long. Will this work?

Sessions are 15 minutes and built around games and quick wins. On wiggly days, swap in one of the 10 no-prep games and call it a lesson.

We're not in the US. Does it work for us?

Yes. It teaches English phonics and works anywhere English is taught. Pages print on both US Letter and A4.

How is this different from reading apps?

It's 100% screen-free. Apps put your child in front of a screen and often charge every month. This kit is paper, a pencil and you at the kitchen table, for a one-time $27. Your child reads real little books they can hold, colour in and read again, and you see every step of their progress yourself.

Is there a subscription?

No. You pay $27 once and the kit is yours.

What if it doesn't work for us?

You're covered by the First Book Promise. Email us within 30 days for a full refund, and keep the kit.

Fifteen minutes tonight could be the start of their first book.
